Auto Transport Info

DriverApplications.com Where drivers find trucking jobs, information for trucking companies and what is needed to apply for a trucking career. Trucker talk in our truckers forum and C.B. radio lingo for the lighter side of trucking.

Auto transport is a skilled trade and one of the better paying trucking jobs in the trucking industry.

It is not easy work, it requires a special "touch" to load and unload cars without damages. It helps to have an understanding of hydraulics and how they work, and to be able to "visualize" how the load of cars will "look" and be placed on the truck before you actually load them. This helps cut down on reloading or "trial and error" loading.

Putting a load of cars on a transport truck is tedious work, you need to know what car/truck will work on what position and whether to drive it or back it on the transport, this helps in keeping axle weights at the legal limits, which in auto transport seems to be the name of the game...keeping your weights within limits set by the d.o.t. Length and overall height are other "games" in hauling cars.

It takes time to be considered a "car hauler", Sure most people can drive a car or two on a trailer, but putting together 9-10-11 car/truck loads is a different story all together. There are so many variables, it cannot be learned over night, it takes time and "hands on" the job to be considered a real "car hauler". Some would say 3 years on the job to be considered a car hauler. I tend to agree with this...There are too many variables, equipment changes over time, and so do new cars and trucks...To feel "comfortable" at loading/unloading just takes time.

Given that, most auto transport companies pay better than general freight haulers, the skill acquired by the car haulers is one that commands better pay, I always say, if you can haul cars, without damages, or a low damage ratio(probably a better term, everyone at some time will cause some damage, it happens)You can work for any car carrier company in America. You are in demand.

I have heard this said many times by car carrier company execs, "Car hauler first, truck driver second". And that makes good sense to me, loading and delivering with a minimum damage ratio is the key to success in this business. Driving the truck is second. Of course a good clean driving record is a plus, it always will be, but experienced car haulers, causing little to no damages keep everyone happy and "in the money".

If your interested in becoming a car hauler or if your an experienced car hauler already we would like to hear from you...We offer good equipment, good pay and benefits, health, dental, optical insurances, matching 401k program, and a fleet the size where you won't be lost in the crowd, and treated as the experienced car hauler you are.

We look forward to hearing from you, and discussing further a career as a car hauler. Or "swap" car hauling stories too.
